Key to Child Safety

Key to Child Safety

We parents go to great lengths to provide our families with nutritious food, the best health care, the finest schools but we don’t realize that a potential home hazard exists in our residence where we raise our children. Have you looked at your window coverings as a potential danger to your children? The window shades we take for granted can take from us the most cherished people and pets in our lives. Therefore, window shade safety is one of the primary child safety products one should provide for the home of small children.

Parents for Window Blind Safety have report that “After 200 deaths throughout the country in the last 10 years , we believe it's well past the time for the government to step in and make a window shade safety standard that will actually help DECREASE the deaths instead of leaving this issue to the hands of the window shade industry.”

Families have lost children this year. They are just learning how to cope in this world without their child. Every family I talk to who has lost a child agrees that homes without pull cords are the safest.  Regardless of the families’ attempts to follow child safety procedures such as tying blind pull cords out of reach, the children have always found a way to get entangled in the cords.  It’s time to insist on cordless window blinds. Our hearts go out to these families who most likely wonder WHY this tragedy is still happening even after the death of their child.”

In early April 2010 "Angel's Law" was introduced in the House of Delegates. The measure will require new or replacement window coverings to be cordless on or after a certain date in foster homes, family day care homes, and child care centers.

The final vote is this week to pass this bill.  Parents in Maryland will now have a safer environment in child daycare.  Will other states take the same steps as Maryland for keeping child care centers safe? We can only hope.

About 2 million children are injured or killed by safety hazards in the home each year. The good news is that many of these incidents can be prevented by using simple child safety products on the market today. One of the major safety hazards are being addressed by many window shade manufacturers by working diligently to design cordless window shade replicas of their best selling window coverings.

Whether it be cordless window shades or any other child safety products …whatever you buy should be sturdy enough to prevent injury to your child, yet easy for you to use. It's important to follow installation instructions carefully. In addition, if you have older children in the house, be sure they re-secure child safety products. Remember, too, that no child proof product or child safety latches are is completely childproof; determined youngsters have been known to disable them.

You can child proof your home for a fraction of what it would cost to have a professional do it. And child safety products are easy to find. You can buy them at hardware stores, baby equipment shops, supermarkets, drug stores, home and linen stores, and through mail order catalogues.

Finally….there’s not a child safety product on the market that can replace parental awareness. Know what your little ones are doing at all times, be aware of their whereabouts, and spend some good old fashion time with them. That’s the best child safety we parents can practice.
